Do license plates need to be returned in North Carolina?
Yes, they need to be removed and returned! North Carolina law requires license plates to be removed and taken to the DMV, or transferred to another vehicle.
Return the plates to a local DMV office or mail them to:
NCDMV Vehicle Registration Section
Renewal Title & Plate Unit
3148 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC 27697-3148
North Carolina law also requires continuous liability insurance on all registered vehicles. A vehicle owner should cancel their insurance coverage only after they have turned in their plates. Canceling insurance before returning the plates will result in a fine.
After June 30, 2020, plates that are issued or renewed in North Carolina will have to be exchanged for new ones every seven years.
Visit the North Carolina official DMV website for more information.
