Ready to sell your junk car? Here are some tips to be sure that you sign your title correctly.
What is a title?
A title document has all the information the DMV or new owner need to know about your vehicle. This includes the legal owner and the vehicle’s year, make, model, and vehicle identification number. You, as the owner, are responsible for completing all necessary sections, including listing the new owner’s name as the purchaser/buyer. If you do not transfer the ownership, you are still liable for the car.
Be sure to fill out all of the purchaser information. Your state will offer a form of release of liability, which lists the new owner’s information and notifies the DMV that you did sell your car.
How do I transfer ownership?
First, be sure you have the most recently issued title. If you’ve lost your title, you can contact You Call We Haul or your DMV to confirm what documents are needed. Depending on your state, it may offer a title exemption where you can sell your junk car without ordering a duplicate title.
Be sure to check who is listed as the registered owner on the front of the title, as this is the person (or people) who needs to sign off as the seller(s). If it lists more than one person, and says nothing or “and” between the names, both people need to sign. If it lists “or” between the names, sometimes represented with a “/” only one of the owners needs to sign. Once the sellers have signed and the purchaser’s name and address are listed, the last section to fill out is the odometer reading. If your car is newer than ten years, you must complete the odometer reading. In most states, this is exempt if the vehicle is ten years or older.
Once you’ve finished filling out the required sections, give the documents to the new owner of your car. Be sure to fill out release forms required by the DMV and hand in your license plates.
Congratulations! You’ve officially sold your junk car!
