How to Transfer Montana Title

How do I transfer title of my vehicle in Montana(MT)?

  • The state of Montana DOES REQUIRE a Certificate of Title in order to transfer ownership of your vehicle, and it must be notarized in order for the transaction to be valid.  HOWEVER, there is an exception to the title requirement if all of the following are met: 1) the vehicle was last titled in Montana, 2) the vehicle is currently registered and 3) the vehicle is being sold to a Montana resident.  In this case, the seller can provide the following forms in lieu of title – Application for Replacement Certificate of title, a Bill of Sale and an Application for Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle.
  • In order to complete the sale of your Montana vehicle, you must transfer your title by entering the name of the buyer/purchaser in the buyer/purchaser field. Please PRINT and SIGN your name in the seller/owner field EXACTLY as it appears at the top of the title.
  • License plates must be removed at time of pickup.  They may be kept, surrendered or transferred to another vehicle.
  • For detailed instructions on how to properly fill out and transfer your Montana title, see the title samples below.
